I pledged $500 to Carmageddon Reincarnation Kickstarter and 5 years later, Stainlessgames still haven’t sent me any physical rewards

The Short of it:

In 2012 I pleged $500 dollar to the kickstarter of the remake of Carmageddon by Stainlessgames. There where only 11 others who pledged at this level.
Besides wanting the game to be made, and loving the erreverance of Nobby and the team, I certainly also expected to get some physical backer rewards.

First physical rewards where expected in 2013.
Last update on Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stainlessgames/carmageddon-reincarnation/posts/1498402

As of August 2017, not a single physical reward has been handed out to anyone, who pledged above $100
Now even the excuses stopped coming. Now they do not even respond to backer queries about it anymore.

Their Kickstarter stretch goals that they made, included a Linux and Mac port, and a DRS free version intended for LAN play. None of these has been produced to date and no indication they are being worked on.

I am far more disappointed in the lack communication and their silence on the topic, than in not getting any rewards.
After 4 (5) years I dont even want the physical rewards anymore. What would be the point now? Its been soured for me.

I don’t think they are con artists, I think they got in over their heads. But I think the Stainless leadership are cowards for remaining in denial and leaving us in perpetual limbo. They are obviously incompetant, and should really just cop to this fact, and admit to us the rewards are never coming. That at least would allow them to save a little bit of dignity.

The game itself is decent. I played for about a year on and off before I lost interest. May play it again in future.

This post serves as nothing more than a record of what happened, and a warning to others not to place their trust in Stainlessgames. And a backup of the main forum thread in case they decide to finally delete it. No futher updates on that thread shall be reflected here.

RagingR2 Fluffy Bunny Posts: 27 Send PM #3 Submitted: Sun, 22/06/2014 – 09:36 When were those post cards sent? According to my overview on the backer site, the post cards should have been sent to me, but I can’t see when the status was changed to “green” (fulfilled). As of today, june 22nd, I haven’t received anything. If these physical goodies are sent from England, I’m guessing it shouldn’t take much more than a few days (a week tops) before they arrive on an adress in the Netherlands, right? EDIT: The same goes for the T-shirt from the $75 tier. Well, with the difference that in my backer overview, that reward is still “white” (not fullfilled), when you guys posted above on june 10th that this reward has been fullfilled (for everyone?). When can I expect the T-shirt to be sent out to me, and how long will that take? Thanks and greetings. Edited by: RagingR2 on Sun, 22/06/2014 – 09:40

If it’s in green it just means it’s ready to be shipped, which as Wiski said they’re trying to as many rewards out to each individual as they can in one go to save on postage and logistics. Obviously they can’t have sorted out the Game In A Box reward yet because that requires the game to be finished. Edited by: Trent on Thu, 18/09/2014 – 12:41

Since most of the remaining tiers include a boxed copy of Carmageddon: Reincarnation it is most likely they will be sent out once we hit final release. We’ll keep you updated on this here and on Kickstarter when we have more info.

That one, and the STICKY MESS reward tier are the only two tiers left to be sent out that do *not* feature a physical copy of the game. I really do hope this means we can get our rewards somewhat earlier. You’ll understand of course that I will want to show off my T-shirts (and promote the game) before the final release date! 🙂 Edited by: RagingR2 on Mon, 05/01/2015 – 15:55

Will there be a tracking code? Insurance? No really, Brazil’s post office (Correios) has a really TERRIBLE service. We’re currently in the progress of scheduling the remaining rewards and hope to have an update in the near future. Please keep an eye on Kickstarter for the next update. Shane, you keep telling us to keep an eye on Kickstarter for the physical rewards, but the last update was 3 months ago, when C:R officially launched… The last KS update focused on updating us about this subject was Abril’14 – https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/stainlessgames/carmageddon-reincarnation/posts/804145 Seriously, if you guys came and said “oh we somehow are broke and there won’t be any” would at least be news. Those backers like me who were looking forward the physical rewards would get sad/mad/rant/rage but life would move on… At least for me, the problem is “merely” being out of news about it. We’ve seen those pics and videos you guys shared a long time ago, with a room full of stuff, and then, nothing. There were updates about the progress of development, there was that post HERE but no KS notification about the Double Eagle, there was the going gold announcement… For my part, I’m most dissapointed by this lack of news. C:R was the KS project I backed with all my heart, with all I could give at the time (it’s still the top one KS funded project on my account). All I’m asking is: give us a detailed update on this.

Since before launch honestly. There was a 3-4 month period before launch where communication to the community dropped to zero, and it wasn’t much improved after launch, if at all. Normally I don’t expect a lot of communication from game devs to the community, but when the game was initially funded via Kickstarter I would hope there’d be more communication, even if it’s only a paragraph or two that takes a few minutes to type up every few weeks about what’s going on. nobby Stainless Posts: 775 Send PM #52 Submitted: Fri, 21/08/2015 – 08:53 Guys, please let me (belatedly) chip in here with an explanation and some news for you. Part of the problem we face here is that we’re a game development studio – and the focus of our attention is constantly on the game(s), and we don’t have spare capacity to be focussed on anything else full-time, and so there’s a tendency (when time seems to rip past at a day a minute) for this stuff to get put on the back burner. However that being said, we do take the commitment to our KS Backers seriously, and we did have a plan in place that was meant to deal with the physical rewards. BUT, this all kind of went to pot when we had our less than stellar full release, and immediately realised that the release didn’t cut it and needed considerable extra work on optimisation (cue all heads down, don’t think about anything else…). And this had the knock-on effect of putting a further delay on the manufacture of a physical game (sure we could release it any time and Steam would patch it, but we really want the boxed game to be the “final final” one, plus getting it organised is another whole lot of work…). So, this meant the posting out of the physical rewards was again put on hold. However, we have been hearing your comments and consternation over our neglect of you. So what we’ve decided is that we really need to sort this out PRONTO. And to that end we’re currently planning to take the hit of the extra costs involved, and send out everything BUT the boxed copies of the game (which will follow at a later date). This is currently being organised. So bear with us, it won’t be long… I was in the war.

bighole Fluffy Bunny Posts: 6 Send PM #53 Submitted: Fri, 21/08/2015 – 10:37 Thank you nobby, belated yes but just the explanation that was previously lacking. For clarity, anyone backing at a level that includes a boxed copy will get the other rewards ‘soon’, with just the boxed copy to follow? A now-appeased Carma-fan…

Jemimus Fluffy Bunny Posts: 4 #54 Submitted: Fri, 21/08/2015 – 11:07 From a Kickstarter Backers point of view, what you just replied is extremely important for the morale out there. I would encourage you to copy-paste this more or less straight into the Kickstarter blog right now, as it will reach far more (possibly frustrated) people there. Thank you guys for all the hard work. As an aside, it would be interesting to hear about how you may have ‘underestimated’ the ‘maturity’ of the game at release. Going over that would be a good exercise in transparency, but also interesting from a project-management point of view. I am in IT, and am always eager to absorb lessons in project-management and ITOPS process, especially when things go a bit ‘south’ 😉

Community feedback may help to avoid problems both with development and with expectations of fans. Sometimes long silence can cause doubts.

First, thank you nobby! I already made it clear on my KS comment but I’ll repeat here: count me with the guys that are saying “if you have to postpone it, do it”. I got a… what? $350 backer level? Seriously, I’m not pitching in 350 just because I find it cute, it’s because Carma was one of my most beloved game years ago, and having the opportunity (and the money, at the time), I felt almost an obligation – I HAD TO BE PART OF IT. I don’t care if it takes more time, and I sure as hell don’t wanna see things get rushed – along with so many others, what I wanted was NEWS NEWS NEWS POST TALK TO US =p so what, you saw that the release build wasn’t satisfying enough? Great, I wouldn’t expect less from that awesome team that Stainless is made of, and I wouldn’t expect any less from you, personally, nobby. Go, do you thing, be awesome. wiski Cunning Stunt Licker Posts: 259 Send PM #65 Submitted: Tue, 25/08/2015 – 11:55 Yeah, my main complaint wasn’t that I hadn’t gotten my stuff yet, it was that I rarely hear anything from the devs about it. I can wait longer on physical rewards that I honestly don’t really care about, especially the boxed version of the game which is never getting opened anyway, I would rather Stainless not spend extra money shipping stuff out multiple time. wiski Cunning Stunt Licker Posts: 259 Send PM #84 Submitted: Sat, 30/01/2016 – 06:28 At this point, I don’t know why they would wait for the final game, since no game is ever final until the developer stops working on it. I would assume that as soon as the game was released out of Early Access on Steam that was the final game. Maybe they just want to make a bit more money to help cover the costs of shipping the merchandise?

RagingR2 Fluffy Bunny Posts: 27 Send PM #85 Submitted: Sat, 06/02/2016 – 23:42 I’m very curious when we will recieve our rewards, or at least an update more than “still no news”. Can’t they give us any info along the lines of “we’re not gonna send out the stuff until the moment that X or Y or Z”. I don’t know what X or Y or Z would be. but they should be telling us. At least that would be some information. After all, the final release of the game was in may 2015; that’s more than 8 months ago now, so what are they waiting for? Right now, all we hear is “we are working on it”. That is NOT really info! Every 4 months they post an apology for lack of communication, and that’s about it. I half hoped we would get SOME physical rewards, like the t-shirts or posters, before the final release of the game. You know, when the buzz and anticipation was still at it’s peak. I realize that that was a little too optimistic, and I had no reason in hindsight, tp expect that they wouldn’t wait until the moment that all the rewards could be sent in one single shipment. But now I am more affraid we won’t get any physical rewards until everyone has already finished the game and moved on to the next hype… I backed the game for $150, no regrets there, I did it for the passion for the game, and I think you guys did a great job. But I really hope you can do a better job at keeping us informed on this particular subject. Edited by: RagingR2 on Sat, 06/02/2016 – 23:47

We are still in the process of finalising plans for the remaining physical rewards. All I can say right now is that we hope to have some more information very soon.

Shane, thanks for your reply, I appreciate you taking the time to post here and respond. But with all due respect, what you just said is the same thing we’ve been hearing for a while now (with regular intervals), and still the same non-informative reply that’s exactly what I was describing in my previous post… Quote: …in the process of finalising plans for the remaining physical rewards… Can you PLEASE enlighten us what that means? Why does it take like 6 months (or more even, I lost count?) to “finalize plans”. It just starts sounding more and more like everything is very, very, very uncertain. As far as we know, this can take another 6 months or maybe even never happen at all.

Blargh, I would settle for a partial refund then the rewards at this point.

Because they do not make physical things and only the game then you have to think they are in the process of trying to get something organized from a manufacturer but it seems they have difficulty’s. Also one of there major things they invested in was the 3d printed cars for the backers of 150$ + tiers which fell though the floor, They lots a crap ton of money doing this and i feel upset for them but if they are still working out plans then either accept it or see if you can do something else but no one likes to see people complain, i think they have something planned its just taking way longer than expected and that is usual for something like this as suppliers can be hard to negotiate with. anyways. Peace man.

Jemimus Fluffy Bunny Posts: 4 #93 Submitted: Mon, 22/02/2016 – 15:33 Today saw this update on the Kickstarter page: ———————— Posted by Stainless Games Today we announced the news that Carmageddon: Max Damage will be released on consoles in mid 2016. We hope you’re as excited as us at the prospect of Carmageddon reaching a wider audience through console, and even better, when Carmageddon: Max Damage is released on PC you will automatically get it too. Yes, that’s another Carmageddon in your Steam library – for free! However we wanted to make it clear that this news has no bearing on your Kickstarter goods, and that if you have not already received them, you can still expect them as planned. 75% of our backers have already received all their rewards, but we want to apologise again to remaining backers and explain the delay. Issues with the PC release meant that at the point we’d previously been expecting to organise and ship the last of the Kickstarter rewards, all our attention was instead diverted to the game. We also had to find a replacement for the model cars as they were of very poor quality, so we are in the process of finalising an exclusive Carmageddon comic book. We’re also working on a deal for the boxed game – which was the main item delaying the final shipment of rewards. We understand the delay in sending out these remaining rewards has been frustrating for you and we’re very aware of our responsibility to Kickstarter backers. We don’t intend to let you down, and hope you will continue to be patient with us for a few more months until we can send out your well-deserved rewards! Visit http://www.carmageddonmaxdamage.com for more information about the new console game. ————————- Good stuff!

Will we get Carmageddon Reincarnation or Carmageddon Max Damage? I know we backed Reincarnation, but getting Max Damage would be all levels of awesome. Max is back. Let there be blood and motor oil

deadsheep Cunning Stunt Licker Posts: 125 Send PM #95 Submitted: Mon, 22/02/2016 – 19:34 I assume that Carmageddon Max Damage is a more “complete” or “finished” version of Carmageddon Reincarnation, so I guess you guys will get the Max Damage box version. Reincarnation owners will probably get Max Damage instead, but I wonder if Stainless will still leave Carmageddon Reincarnation purchasable in Steam or if it’s going to be replaced with Max Damage, leaving Reincarnation available only for the players who already have it (and these guys will also get Max Damage, free of charge). If they leave both games available on the store, then I guess they’ll be bundled with each other, so if you get Reincarnation you also get Max Damage, but if you get Max Damage will you also get Reincarnation? I’m not sure about it, would be great to have some more detailed feedback from Stainless. Either way, fantastic work on the game, that’s a shit ton more stuff that’s going in which we thought we’d never see 🙂 Can’t wait for it! Sorry for the derailing the thread a little bit. Phoenix Fluffy Bunny Posts: 3 Send PM #98 Submitted: Tue, 23/02/2016 – 02:27 Ahhh, so Stainless have gone for the rename/rebrand idea? Or that is at least an added benefit to releasing an “enhanced” version for Xbone and PS4. All the rage these days and this explains much of the silence. Can’t really announce it with a bang if it leaks to us lot first! I don’t blame ’em though, anything to distance the game from the (now unfair) reviews and the bad rep upon initial release. So, reading between the lines of the KS a little: Every KS backer will get the new version for free (no reading between the lines required for this one). Not clear, but I hope everyone else who owns the game will get the new version too – not doing so would be PR suicide. There was a lot of backlash for the Metro 2033/LL devs pumping out a patch/next gen re-release and charging a chunk for it (especially for LL’s minor changes). Similar things have happened with other games too. If you guys can’t afford to hand it out for free, offer a reasonable and permanent discount to upgrade. People get pissed if it is time limited without being clearly stated (and a visit to the steam forums or almost any comment thread should give you an idea of the average reading comprehension level among the vocal ones). Judging by “this news has no bearing on your Kickstarter goods”, I think that means we won’t be forced to wait for the Max Damage version before we get our gear, or at least the timelines are independent. Would make sense given Nobby’s comment about getting these out to us, a while back. Part of me wants the awesome new box art, but the rest of me would really like the gear I backed for, nearly 4 years ago. On the whole, great news!

I was ultra excited to have Carma come back but the development has been tediously long and after all is said and done a new different game is then produced for us to buy when promises made for the last one did not come to fruition. Interesting, as I was against the idea of every one who backed got all DLC and cars back when that was a thing now over 2 years ago. I said then that it was a terrible idea because it meant there would not be enough money on the table to do the game like we all wanted. I was booh’ed by the free loaders, and yet look where we are now. A “new” different game… and still the $150+ Backers of the original other game got screwed. So no thank you, I backed up stainless bullshit for far to long and they did jack shit on the backers promises. Ill pass on the “new” “different” game as easily as they passed on doing what was right by the backers to begin with. I’m pretty sure Nobby stated in either this thread or another related to the backers being pissed off, that they were going to send out stuff already but hold back on the car replacements and the boxed game due to it simply not being ready. This never came to light however. I too feel like I have been fucked over by them at this point, promises keep coming and yet nothing actually happens, instead we are given a carrot to nibble on at full arms length until we remind ourselves that we are still hugely out of pocket. I basically paid $150 for just a game at this point. You can not blame people for being upset by the fact promises keep being made and then nothing comes to actual fruition, if they did what was stated and sent out the vast majority of the stuff as promised it would of kept people happy, but screwing over one of the largest tiers of backers is majorly disappointing. Who knows, might finally have my actual rewards by 2020 when the game is dying down and everyone has moved on to something else…

As someone who is pretty much past the point of caring, I’d like to point out that when the Kickstarter was set up, Max Damage was not in the plans. The plan was for the final version to be the version that came out just over a year ago now on 21 May 2015. That would be the final version expectations for when the rest of the rewards being shipped should be based on, not a version that was then planned on later. I personally don’t really give a crap if the version on the physical copy is of Reincarnation or Max Damage, because I never planned on opening the damn thing in the first place, since I already had 4 Steam keys. Again, I don’t really care anymore, I pledged $150 to get Carmageddon again, was generally disappointed in it, and have barely touched it since it was released. I can live with that even if I never get any of the rewards I was promised when I pledged to the Kickstarter 4 years ago. Maybe Max Damage will fix the stuff I don’t like about Reincarnation, maybe it won’t, I’m just disappointed by the lack of communication from Stainless in general, even if that communication is just to tell us that shit’s fucked and they can’t send us our rewards as planned. I figured after how poorly Reincarnation was received that the main reason for delays was because Stainless wasn’t making enough money on the game to get us our stuff, but again, actually telling us that and giving us some idea of their plans would have been much better than months of silence followed by someone randomly popping in to say, “We’re working on it.” and then more months of silence. The only reason I even remember I had rewards to get yet is because I subscribed to this thread, so am reminded about it every time someone pleads Stainless for any information.

I loved the game in early access, then for some reason it was released and I think I have maybe played it for a couple of hours tops 🙁 Been to the Isle of Wight four times since our rewards were said to be on the way, maybe I should knock on the office next month (cos yeah.. I’m going back there again for a holiday). Seriously, more communication would be lovely. As to the people complaining about.. well.. complaining, FUCK YOU. Some of us expect something for our money, you don’t buy stuff online from eBay or whatever, pay for it and then forget about it do you? You expect to be given what you paid for. I could of backed for a key.. sure.. but I wanted MORE from the backing system, I pledged because everything sounded nearly too good to be true with the double eagles (which are now completely fucked). By the time this is resolved the game will be long forgotten (by that I mean Max Damage Edition has been out for a year..), or at least it feels that way with the lack of communication.

Tonrac Piledriver Posts: 540 Send PM #130 Submitted: Thu, 30/06/2016 – 16:18 No, Psyrgery, you are not alone … i won’t tell i don’t care about reward but i understand that it can take long time cause the game is not finish yet. “As to the people complaining about.. well.. complaining, FUCK YOU. ” @wolfhart: Not a smart attitude to insult the one that don’t share your opinion … maybe you overreact because you are upset about the lack of communication, i could understand that. The problem is that you backed for a project, when you give money for a project you accept to take a risk. You never bought an object. If the project goes right you got the reward … in the contrary you don’t have. Reincarnation project had their scope changed from an episodic release game to a “complete” game, just that delayed a lot the reward. Then because of performance problem the launch was a failure, and they need to focus on Max Damage to maybe save the game. Nothing is loose right now, they still have some hope to have our rewards after the release of Max Damage on PC. I am agree that they could ameliorate their communication and make some effort to explain what happen and the reason of the delay. Edited by: Tonrac on Thu, 30/06/2016 – 16:19

Kickstarter bring maybe only 10% of the total budget of the game, the 90% was bring by Les Edgar (and Stainless own revenue gain with other game) with the goal of port the game on console. If Reincarnation was a great success on PC, we will already have our rewards … but it isn’t a success (because the game was bashed for performance issue) … The console version was not made with our money, our money was spend long time ago. They have to take the business decision (console version) in order to give a future to the Carmageddon ip. I think that, after the release of max damage on PC, we will have our reward a few month later (unless Stainless goes to bankrupt but i don’t think it will happen).

It will still happen though – The Steam release will be some time after console release. It will be months, not years It seem they are already at work on the PC version of Max Damage https://mobile.twitter.com/carmageddongame/status/760498186943340544 The frustrating, and frankly, infuriating thing about this for me is not even the waiting. Its the lack of communication. The great periods where we hear absolutely nothing. No updates. I am not surprised this came up during a twitch stream, and thank you Tonrac for fishing this info out of it. But why cant they update this thread, or the Kickstarter mailing list, with that same update? And we are still more or less in the dark here. Which physical rewards dont ‘exist yet’ , still after all these years. When will they be ‘created’. What is the plan for the next 6 months regarding this? etc. How many years does it take to take get such a thing organized? There is a point where you have to wonder about basic competency in executing on your commitments. There are reasonable time-periods to have to wait on a promised crowdfunding reward, and at some point it starts to become unreasonable. I think we crossed into unreasonable territory some time ago. But this is subjective of course. There appear to be people in this thread with endless patience 😉 And what of the promised Mac and Linux port. Even if it they don’t have the resources to work on it, ( which I could understand, it is a small dev team after all) they should at least then tell us so. But I would hope, and expect they should at least have it on a roadmap somewhere.. some kind of target date, even if only as a soft goal, for themselves, but something that at least they could share with us. If they actually don’t ..well again, that tells you something about competency in executing on your (stated) goals. This whole thing gives the overwhelming impression they they simply do not have their shit together in many ways. That in itself one might find excusable, but the lack of transparency and communication about this (or perhaps self-reflection; developer know thyself?) I find a lot less forgivable. I think its a great shame that it has soured my feelings about a company I was, at some point, quite a fan of. Edited by: Jemimus on Wed, 03/08/2016 – 12:01

Tonrac Piledriver Posts: 540 Send PM #145 Submitted: Thu, 04/08/2016 – 20:48 Quote: Which physical rewards dont ‘exist yet’ , still after all these years. The physical reward that don’t exist yet is the game … it’s impossible to make a physical version of a game that don’t exist yet. Indeed, the final version of the game is Max Damage not Reincarnation and Max Damage is not available yet. Quote: There appear to be people in this thread with endless patience 😉 People that seem to have endless patience are people that come in that forum daily, that follow the twitch and the twitter. So we had news that unfortunately a lot of you don’t have. I try to spread the news on french forum and other do the same on that site. For example mad mike do report of the news we got during the twitch: http://www.carmageddon.com/forum/topic/29495 In fact even the “years of waiting” are quite subjective. We don’t buy a final product but fund a project. But like you said the lack of communication was the best enemy of Stainless… For example : With the kickstarter they plan to release an episodic game … but the extra fund (Less Edgar) had modified the scope. Stainless want to release a more complete game … so the estimated release date (2013) that concern the episodic game couldn’t be right. They work hard but are overambitious and release a game in 2015 that suffer for performance issue. http://www.teamvvv.com/en/news/comments/Interview-How-Carmageddon-conquered-the-car-combat-genre “With funding secured, Carmageddon Reincarnation was released to the public on Steam Early Access in 2013. Unfortunately, however, the team was overambitious with their resources. Aptly, the release was something of a car crash. Severe performance issues meant that Carmageddon Reincarnation was virtually unplayable for the majority of players – even if their PCs should have been more than capable of running the game. “Carmageddon: Reincarnation turned into a bigger project than originally intended, took longer than intended and cost a lot more than intended!” says Barnden. “The result was far more content and far more game than we originally intended. Which sort of hints at a pattern in game development – particularly when the project is one dear to your heart.”” So if we take the release date of reincarnation, we are in fact waiting for one year (and not 4 like i read before) … but with Max Damage it will become silly to offer a physical version of Reincarnation to bakers … So if we consider that the final version of the game is Max Damage, then we have to wait the PC version release before we have our rewards. But like You said, they never communicate all that news in a clear way, or we need to build a puzzle with pieces of informations we got on a twitch or in a topic or on an answer on twitter. Quote: And what of the promised Mac and Linux port. They said in a twitch that they are still committed into the Mac and Linux version of the Game. But i agree, if they communicate on their difficulties etc … some of us will just offer them our patience and they didn’t need asking for that. Sorry if my answer is unclear, english is not my native language. Edited by: Tonrac on Fri, 05/08/2016 – 09:41

Regular visitors here have been members for in excess of 5 years and seem to readily accept there is an ebb and flow of interest, naturally, that swelled around the various stages of releases and announcements. For me personally, being a forum member for over 5 years (I think?) I have always lamented the lack of blog updates and general communication. There was a period during C:R’s development, presumably when work was at it’s most frantic and a resource was attributed to facing the general public to build interest in the product, when there were weekly / fortnightly updates. I can appreciate the team numbers have probably changed since and also the fact that there is less to talk about being that there have been two final products presented on various platforms. I say it again though, if Carmageddon is to be a brand that is to survive, go further, have additional content, be developed into a sequel, gain strength as a franchise (strike through depending on your level of optimism), the game needs better communication and marketing. Now I’m quite lucky in that I’ve been able to enjoy C:R on PC and am not frustrated about waiting for C:MD so my comments maybe diluted slightly. However, I want to know, out of love for Carmageddon, Stainless, and the future of the brand, what is going on…? I’m really trying not to sound pretentious, or that my words are the be and end all, and must be heeded, not at all, I’m going to make the following suggestions, as I have before, as a fan, as a member of the fan base giving honest feedback. Regular news / blogs / competitions / events needs to be posted such as: An announcement on C:MD for PC An honest update on MAC / Linux development – people are getting pissed off… give them a real update with actual progress update, I think people will really appreciate that. Multiple general good natured / informative updates akin to Rosarios graphics updates – I, for one, loved the regular updates way back, I’m interested in the goings-on behind the scenes. An update / teaser blog on prospective DLC, vehicles, maps etc – Keep us excited in the brand, work must be going on somewhere, but drip feed it… keep it tantalising. Part of the charm of the original carmageddon was racing and unlocking cars you’d never seen. With C:R’s release and C:MD’s to some extent, all the new content was presented in videos and pics before the game even released. There was little surprise when unlocking new stuff. The game need FRESH new content. An update on the EVILC10 tour – You’ve got a fuck off insane rat rod. Post some pics and videos of expo’s where people are loving it, I haven’t even seen it since the reveal. Use it for publicity online rather than whilst parked up at an expo. I can’t think of anything else to add, but people feel free to comment and make suggestions. I write this message with the best of intentions and from the heart.

Amen. It’s very sad, but frankly I have given up hope that we’ll ever recieve anything now. A big part of that is the lack of communication from Stainless; it’s a bad bad sign if you ask me. Also; I have pretty much finished the single player campaign of ‘Max Damage’ by now, so frankly I have stopped caring. By the time we recieve anything, if and when we recieve anything, it’ll be like, “Yay!! — two T-shirts for a game I finished like 3 years ago!” When the heck am I ever gonna wear those? It would have been fun wearing them in the period leading up to the release of the game (by which I mean “Reincarnation”). Right now, send them straight to poor people in Africa for all I care, there’s someone who has more use for those T-shirts than me, at this point. As for the money I spent: I’ll try to forget it to get over the anger. I wanna get on with my life. I know that sounds dramatic, but we’re not talking about the kind of money that I spend on a daily basis… However I am done being frustrated about it at this point, so I am just gonna try my best to not think about it ever again. In a way that’s gonna be hard though, because what it will be, is an everlasting reminder to never spend big ammounts of money on a game through “Crowdfunding”, like ever again. From now on my money is gonna go to finished games AND merchandise. First show me the goods, and then I’ll spend a normal market value ammount of money on your game and any T-shirts. Without an ETA of multiple years. That’s a sad conclusion for small (indy) game developers. But that’s the unfortunate effect of a crowdfunding mess like this. The only part I disagree is about leaving the crowdfunding scene. I’ve had more than my share of great fundings, like Halcyon 6, Orion Trail, Exploding Kittens, TerraTech, Basement, Timespinner, Children of Morta (the last trhee still both in dev) – but I’m never again forking US$350 (specially when it means almost R$1k at the time, more now) for goodies. Carma:R was the first time I had the funds to do so, but will also be the last I crowdfund no matter if I can later. I don’t mind giving up 10-15 bucks for a game that can just flop – but that kinda cash for promised awesome physical goodies… never again.

I mean the project succeeded… more than succeeded even. They overshot the Kickstarter target amount by a fair margin, they finished the game (which is a fine game and very fun to play), and it’s been out for quite some time now. All a lot of people are waiting for now is the physical rewards that were promised in the kickstarter. I think it’s fair to expect to recieve the rewards that were promised in the Kickstarter campaign ESPECIALLY since the Kickstarter did succeed (and more than that), and the game was made and got succesfully released. And also this: CitizenSwift wrote: I think a “Sorry guys, this ain’t gonna happen.” would go down better than the silence. I mean if the problem is that sending all the stuff out is expensive, and maybe that’s a problem because the game didn’t sell as many copies as hoped, then please just let the Kickstarter backers now… Asking for a donation to cover the shipping cost is better than what is happening now: complete silence from their side for a few years now. First of all, no need to get aggressive… I don’t think I was saying anything outrageous. Secondly, I am sure you’re right. A succesful Kickstarter does not mean they made huge (if any) profits on the game. But this is no way to reward your Kickstarter backers, who enabled the first ‘spark’ to let you make the game. Nowhere did I see a huge disclaimer like “we’re only gonna send you these backer rewards if the game becomes a sufficiently large financial success”. They promised rewards in return for a backing on Kickstarter, so they should deliver them. Otherwise don’t make promises… Sure, you know you’re taking a risk when you’re backing a Kickstarter, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for them not to deliver on their promises. You know it sometimes happens, but I hope that this won’t be their defense if we don’t get anything at all in the end. Also, I hope for their sake that they haven’t put their hopes on crowdsourcing to help fund any future projects, if that’s the way they handle promises to their backers. Anyway… what are you trying to say by claiming the game wasn’t a huge success? It sounds like you are defending that we might not see the rewards come our way, like ever. That is not the official position of Stainless, as of yet. Well we haven’t heard from them in a while, which isn’t much better, but if and when they talk about it, we usually here that eventually we will get the rewards. That was a bunch of words! You weren’t really saying anything however… They promised to send us rewards. They didn’t send them yet. They keep postponing the moment when they will send out rewards. Are those armchair assumptions? They could have calculated the shipping costs before making Kickstarter promises. They could have foreseen the risk that the game would not become a commercial success, even when the Kickstarter succeeded gloriously. If commercial success was necessary to be able to fulfill the promised Kickstarter rewards, they could have warned us about that in advance. They could send us an update like every 6 months. Are those also armchair assumptions?

Toshiba-3 Velociraptor Fister Posts: 1116 Send PM #195 Submitted: Wed, 05/07/2017 – 11:07 They could have… they could have… they could have… They would do a lot of things differently if they could go back in time. They’d probably not rely on crowdfunding at all. There’s been a lot of mistakes, physical gifts being the biggest one (along with setting a stretch goal before the original goal is reached, IMO). If we were put in their shoes back then, it’s safe to assume we’d have a similar chain of decisions. I mean, it’s easy to point out faults in retrospect. It’s pretty obvious that C:R/C:MD isn’t a commercial success and I guess they’re focusing this much on the mobile title to reach a more comfortable situation where they’ll have the possibility to look back at what they left unfinished and fulfil it. That’s how I see it. A bit more transparency would be welcomed and interesting, I understand the same reply from them every 6 months is disappointing to say the least. … and carmageddon add-ons at road reaction.

Piece by piece, as Jack would have it. Starting with the “Good idea, don’t enjoy” part. I stopped playing exactly because I couldn’t “enjoy” the game. Next, let’s move on to “after paying $150” – the first correction is, as I’ve mentioned, the ammount of cash – the goody ball bag tier was $350, not $150. So there. And then “because you are mad”. I’m not mad, I just said, I’m disappointed. You do know the meaning of the word, right? I look at the game, I remember the promises, I remember how long it’s been since nobby or anyone else said anything about the backers, and I feel sad. I feel let down. I was going to say something on the lines of “boohoo ps4”, but you finish with “because we didn’t get a mac/linux version” – so you should AT THE LEAST understand the feeling I’ve mentioned, if not feel the exact same. Anyway, don’t bother to quote me an answer – this will be my last post around here until we have any news about the missing promised rewards. As I’ve said, good riddance.

What the hell. There’s really not a problem wíth Kickstarter itself. I have backed Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, Shadowrun, Moebius, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Dead State, Shadowgate and Forsaken Fortress. Of those, every single one have worked flawlessly (with delivered rewards in good shape, continuous updates to backers and so forth) except Forsaken Fortress, which fell through due to an underestimate of the budget. But hey, that was fine because the devs let us know a while into the project. Of course it’s never fun losing money, but that’s part of the risk involved in kickstarting a project. And they let us know about it! Unlike Stainless, which appear to be completely comfortable giving us backers a middle finger and leaving us hanging. Edited by: argan on Tue, 08/08/2017 – 05:34

Yes, without a doubt Stainless used the kickstarter to steal your money. The whole point was to take that $500k and run and they totally got away with by using the ingenious scam of actually making a game which cost like ten times that to much make. Such dastardly rascals. Quote: except Forsaken Fortress, which fell through due to an underestimate of the budget. But hey, that was fine because the devs let us know a while into the project. I understand that. It’s a bit like how Stainless made it clear they had underestimated the budget by doing a big announcement about getting a few million in extra funding from Les Edgar back before Reincarnation’s pre-alpha was released, right? Quote: And now we learn they’ve been pouring money into a new project/mobile game without fulfilling or even letting us know anything about the rewards. We now learn (early last year, shortly after Max Damage was announced) they’ve been pouring money (likely invested by AIG) into a mobile game (which obviously re-uses and modifies a lot of existing assets and uses Unity with a small team for a relatively quick and cheap development) without (yet) fulfilling the rewards. Yeah, screw Stainless for keeping the money flowing, what are they, a business? Sarcasm aside, backing a game on Kickstarter is a huge risk to backers, Kickstarter make this abundantly clear before you press the “pledge” button. Actually making a game is an even bigger risk to developers. If a game does not make enough money (or, as is often likely, loses significant amounts of money) then the developers have two options: move onto something else which might make money or shut the business. Developers can desire more than anything in the world to keep working on a project forever and do everything they originally promised their fans but they won’t be able to if there isn’t the money to do it. Fans end up anywhere between disappointed and angry, while developers end up anywhere between heartbroken and unemployed. People are talking about the huge amount of money they spent on backing the game so let’s talk about money in proper perspective. Most gamers really don’t appreciate how fucking massive the cost of making games is and how difficult it is for the vast majority of games out there to make that money back. $600k sounds like a huge amount of money which you could make anything with, but in reality it’s just enough to cover running a studio of a dozen people for a year, less when you take out fees and money spent on the rewards. This game took over five times as long as that with a team four times that size. Expensive shit, right? Then there’s other stuff which costs money, such as contracting specialist companies to create sound effects, licensing music (Zero Signal doesn’t come cheap), licensing middleware such as Yebis and Umbra, paying for development software and hardware, etc. The money involved in making games is insane, even at the level of a small independent studio like Stainless. But they surely made loads of money on C:MD, right? Sure. Just take a look at somewhere like SteamDB to see a good estimate of how many people own the game and multiply it by the cost of buying it on steam to have a good overestimation of how much money it made, what with substantial amounts of those players being given free keys by kickstarter backers, people buying it in sales and steam taking a cut of sales. To you or me it would be a life changing amount of money, but to a games studio which has put millions in to make a game I think it’s safe to say the game didn’t sell nearly as well as it needed to. Shane keeps saying they are still working towards fulfilling the rest of the rewards and will let everyone know when more details are available. I’m just making a guess here off the top of my head based on all this public knowledge, but rather than them working on Crashers instead of fulfilling rewards, maybe it’s possible that getting more money coming into the company from another project such as, oh I dunno, a small mobile game, could be part of working towards fulfilling the rewards? Just a thought.

How EA ruined C&C – The Installer

No, I have not played C&C4 yet, though I will soon.

And no, this is not a post analysing in detail the gameplay, estetics, production quality, storyline, etc of the various C&C incarnations and how they have gone to shit since EA toolk over Westwood and then abolished it.

Instead, I am going to simply demonstrate something that very nearly and very completely encapsulates the difference between C&C during Westwood en C&C during EA.

The Installation of the game.

See here first of all, the DOS installer for C&C1

Then see here the DOS installer for Red Alert 1

Now lets look at what we get with C&C3 installer:

C&C3 Install Fail

Its not even in English, i dont even get to choose the language.

EA, FUCK. YOU.

They wont let me pay for it!

Yesterday, Felicia day and the crew of The Guild released a music video which is awesome.
I am a fan of Felicia Day and the Guild, so I want to support them and purchase with actual money the music video and the song itself.

Lets just be clear about this.

I want to pay them with my MONEY

And they wont let me. Retarded, backward, outdated international copyright law is stopping me from actually legally BUYING digital content.

FUCK!

How DARE they accuse US, the digiratii, of PIRACY when they themselves cannot get their collective heads out of their asses and ACCOMODATE ME?!

I WOULD PAY FOR THIS DAMN YOU by you.

Just the other day, I had exactly the same experience when I tried to watch the new Ghostbusters game trailer.

So thank you, after getting me exited and nostalgic about Ghostbusters, they deny me a FREE TRAILER. FREE!

So partially out of SPITE, partually out of not actually having ANY OTHER VIABLE OPTION, I torrented the ENTIRE Ghostbusters movie, Blueray rip, in HD

Broken Hardware Part 3

IMG_3283 by you.

Things are getting desperate. I am really at my wits end now.

A ray of light appeared when I removed the Creative Labs X-Fi soundcard, and other USB peripherals. The thinking was that if it was a power issue, that might help.

Low and behold, there was an improvement. The crashing continued, but was no longer resulting in permanent screen corruption as my previous pics show. Basicly in Mass Effect, the graphics freeze, as usual, but after an alt-ctrl-delete, the game and the graphics will pop back in a playable state. The crashes are also less frequent, and its sometimes possible to play for half an hour or more, without it crashing once.  However, when it does freeze, the freezing seems to come in waves, where the game will freeze every minute or so for period, before becoming more or less playable again for a while.   It doesn’t matter what i do in game though. I just leave it and it will crash eventually, with the characters standing around idely.

Grand Theft auto, on the other hand, still gives corruption, again, only after a while sometimes, but no longer the pixel mess. It will corrupt the textures in game, then freeze, then crash out to the desktop. GTA is more consistent in crashing that Mass Effect though, at this point.

Stuff I have tried since the last post:

– Took the PC appart and running on the table.  More or less excludes shorting with the case.
– Memtest86, turned up nothing (remember hte memory is suspect because its one of the few common components across the old and the new hardware)
– Removed 3 of the 4 RAM, no effect
– Replaced the Keyboard and Mouse with a different keyboard and mouse, no effect
– Reconnected the old PSU, no effect

IMG_3285 by you.

I have been going over how the PSU stuff is suppose to work, still thinking its a power issue.
The new 800watt PSU I got (Gigabyte Odin Pro) is a very good PSU, good reviews, and is know to deliver well on the voltage and amps. It has 4 separate dedicated +12v “rails”, two of which can deliver 28amps, more than enough for this setup.   Now I have been running Speedfan, and besides measuring temperature, it can give a readout on Voltage.

IMG_3272 by you.

Now here is the worrying part. It shows 11.35v on the 12v readout. Way too little. However, the BIOS itself, when I boot into it, is telling me the 12v is at 12.04, which is spot on. I did read that software indications of voltage are unreliable. Regardless, I reconnected the old 650watt no-name PSU, and its giving me the same readout in Speedfan, and in the BIOS slightly higher, 12.152v

IMG_3313 by you.

The whole thing still smells of a power issue. The way people on forums seem to have described power-related issues seems spot on with what I am having here. But it may just be confirmation bias of course.

There are 2 approaches I can take at this point. The first is to reinstall Windows, in this case Vista, again. I cant be sure Windows 7 is not at least a part of the problem, even though I doubt it because the problems started on Vista originally. I need to get my hands on a version with a valid key, but I think I know where, my original key didnt seem to work anymore as you know. I think I know where.

IMG_3310 by you.

The other path is to continue digging into the power issue. I have seen several forum examples of people that had similar instability, that they managed to solve by upping the voltage of components ever so slightly. The CPU and/or the RAM for example. I may try this, there are certain margins that we can play in safely. I am not convinced either PSU is not performing well, but to really confirm it, I would need a multi-meter, which I dont have. I may buy one, its generally usefull to have around anyway.

I still have not heard back from the shop about my 295 card. I am assuming they have not recieved a replacement yet. I will call them tomorrow.  I may explain this whole thing to them, but I suspect they will give me the usual shopping list of things I have already tried.

And the very last thing I want to do is bring the parts round to them to have a look at. Its a logistical nightmare.

A fist full of broken hardware

The last 4 days have been nightmarish. As in, the worst kind of hardware upgrade nightmare.

IMG_3187 by you.

It started early last week, when I started getting serious issues playing Mass effect. The graphics driver would suddenly crash and reset, causing an interruption and minimizing the game. Windows would restart the driver, generate a popup, and then I could keep playing.
This started to get progressively worse, as after the first crash, the in-game graphics would slowly start to corrupt. Textures would start to go missing, geometric shapes would start to get out of sync, and lighting effects would go haywire. Tried the newest Nvidia drivers, no effect.

IMG_3195 by you.
The 8800 even failed in dos mode.

IMG_3196 by you.
My old card, the 8800GTX
Now I was already considering getting a better card, as I was not impressed by the performance of Mass Effect, and my Nvidia 8800GTX was getting on a bit, now over 2 years old.
So I went out and got myself the new Nvidia 295, which is basicly a duel-core version of a 260.
Its the most powerful card on the market today.
I also saw that the quad-core Intel 775’s where down to some nice prices, so I also pickup up the 3Ghz version, the q9650. I knew my mainboard, the Asus Striker Extreme, should be able to use it.

IMG_3186 by you.

On Thursday I swapped out the Nvidia cards, and had a good night of play on the new 295. But it was obvious how much of a bottleneck the CPU was now.
The next night, I swapped out the CPU. However, imagine my suprise when the Quad core didnt play nice at all. The PC would not boot at all with it in there. Under the assumption it was lack of having the correct microcode for the new CPU, I downloaded the last BIOS file, and flashed it with the EZ-Flash tool in the Bios.
That was the last time my Striker Extreme ever booted.
I am clueless about what went wrong. It was the correct Bios file, and a perfectly normal and supported means of flashing.

So Saterday I went back to the shop, and got myself an Asus P5Q Deluxe mainboard.
After putting it all back together again, I let the original Vista installation boot up.
It actually dealt with all the changes quite well.
Tried mass effect, and while it ran very smoothly now, as expected, within minutes I got pretty bad texture and vexel corruption. So not exactly the same problem as with the old card, but quite similar.
Supreme Commander ran smoothly and without any corruption, but would suddenly crash out without warning.
I ran into an additional problem with Vista. Because i had changed so many bits of hardware, it now said i needed to re-activate it. But when I tried this, it said the key was already in use. Rather strange, considering this was a volume-license key and already in use by my laptop and several other computers i am aware of. Volume license keys should be able to be used multiple times.

New card: the Nvidia 295GTX duel core

IMG_3188 by you.New board: The Asus P5Q Deluxe

By this point, I was suspecting the driver-instability, if that is indeed what it was, may well be down to windows. Coupled with the activation issue, I decided to take the opertunity and install Windows 7, RC build 1700. Once this was installed, I went about getting the games back on. Mass effect needed to be re-downloaded, so I gave GTAIV a try. This was on the default drivers supplied with Windows 7.
Much to my disappointment, I got severe texture and shading corruption again, similair to what i had in Mass effect.

IMG_3193 by you.

I have tried various combination’s of drivers now, but the largest difference has been when I have turned off multi-core rendering in the Nvidia control panel. The problems are there clearly with just 1 core, but with 2 cores on GTA crashes almost immediately. I tried some Left 4 Dead, which crashed on 2 cores, but ran reasonably well on 1 core. Most distressingly, is that sometimes when it crashes, for example in Supreme Commander, it shows a bad-pixel pattern over the screen, not just in 3D, but also on the 2D Windows desktop.

IMG_3191 by you.

Supreme Commander with pixel snow inside the game, and even on Windows desktop

Mass effect goes crazy with duel cores on, vexel nightmare. With just a single core on for rendering, it only(!) freezes every 5 minutes.
So I am more or less out of ideas. My suspicion is that my new card is as broken as my old card. And the old card is very broken, as even in the boot screen it showed vertical red lines across the screen, probably indicating fried memory or something else bad.
We already threw out the original box of the 295, but its got a 3 year warranty, so I should be able to get it repaired, or get a replacement. I am hoping for the latter.

Maybe I will think of something else to try tomorrow, but it looks like i will be going back to the shop soon.

Domino’s screwing me

Domino’s – Menukaart.

What the FUCK is up with Domino’s Pizza in Leidschendam?!
(for the spiders’ benefit, I am talking about the Filiaal Leidschendam, Damplein 16
070-3275959)

First I found out, at 10:05pm that they are not longer open till 11:00pm, as they have been for the 7 years I have lived here, but till 10:00pm. Then today I get charged 10.50 euros for a Medium Hot and Spicy, while 3 weeks ago, it was 9.50, again, as it had been for years.

And of course the delivery guy swears its never been different.

I usually have a 10 euro note on me, so that was always convenient for Pizza + tip. Now its not only a slower transaction at the door, due to the change having to be counted out, it inconvenieces me to have a single note, plus 50 cents lying around perpetually.

Fuck this.
