My sister actually posted on her blog! Wh000t!
I considder this a major milestone in my quest to get the entire world to start blogging! Bwhua ha ha!
For a first post its pretty big, and also raises a good question we where wondering about earlier. Why should history matter to us? Why is it inportant that we should know our history.
Now personally, I feel history is important, and personally I find it interesting. But I am having some trouble in actually justifying why the common man should actually care, even though I feel that he should.
Lets have a google and some copy-pasting:

Let’s face it, our first experience with History is that it is a course that we have to take in order to graduate. As a junior and senior high school student we are confronted with American history, state history and perhaps even a general course in western civilization or world history. We didn’t have a choice. And the fact that we are forced to take history puts us on the offensive. We begin to build that grandiose brick wall that will prevent us from getting anything important out of history.

Why Study History? – The American Historical Association
People live in the present. They plan for and worry about the future. History, however, is the study of the past. Given all the demands that press in from living in the present and anticipating what is yet to come, why bother with what has been? Given all the desirable and available branches of knowledge, why insist—as most American educational programs do—on a good bit of history? It is commonly acknowledged that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present. The analysis and interpretation of history provide an essential context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics, and cultures. Understanding the present configuration of society is not the only reason to study the past; history also provides unique insight into human nature and human civilization. By demanding that we see the world through the eyes of others, that we develop a sense of context and coherence while recognizing complexity and ambiguity, and that we confront the record not only of human achievement but also of human failure, cruelty, and barbarity, the study of history provides us with a richly-textured, substantive framework for understanding the human condition and grappling with moral questions and problems. History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts, the quest for wisdom and virtue.

It is perhaps the best means to achieving full consciousness of both necessity and freedom, permanence and change – of the always difficult but honorable terms of mortality, on which human beings have repeatedly failed, and in failure have created deathless values. In this consciousness we may know more freedom amid our necessities, more rest amid change.

to me, history is a big long list of cultural, political, social and environmental fuck-ups that we should do our best to ensure do not happen again…. unfortunately modern people are as stupid as people have ever been, historically speaking, and so the world is still quite officially fucked.
