6 hours of Civilization, and expanding my sword collection

It was our friend Omar’s birthday this weekend, so we went into the city to get him a goody.

We went to get Civilization: The Boardgame.
Now our whole gang has played the Civ games on the pc, and seeing the game so succesfully transfered to board was seriously cool.
After getting back to Sweetlake we went to Omar’s and had grill.

Though I was initially a bit hessitant to start playing so late on saterday night (Omar is not the most practicle person I know when it comes to planning), we had a lot of fun doing so, and I eventually went home at 7am this morning. I am not a great fan of board games usually, but I wont mind going back to this one with the gang.

We actually bought Civ at the Elf store in the Hague, and while we where their I noticed that finally one of the Lord of the Rings swords, The Ringwraith sword, has gone down in price.

However, looking around online now, to find a pic for this blog, I find that he US dollar prices on most of these online shops is considderably lower than what they are asking on the Elf shop. Perhaps I should find out how much shipping costs would be.

But since I am in actuality a loyal customer there, I did order BlacK Legion Blade from the Kit Rae collection, which in design is very similair to the Valermos – Sword of fire, from the same collection, which I already have:

I really love that shiny black finish and de pattern on the design. Very cool. It should be about 100 euro’s, but again I have to wonder if I am being ripped off.

Meanwhile my sister is more of a Hibben kind of gal. She saw Gil Hibben’s Jackal being wielded in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and wanted it thereafter.

There are quite a few other items that United Cutlery offers that I would rather like having, but its all so expensive! In my opinion they really offer some of the coolest collections from all the main sword and knife companies.

e importance of history (and blogging ;)

My sister actually posted on her blog! Wh000t!

I considder this a major milestone in my quest to get the entire world to start blogging! Bwhua ha ha!

For a first post its pretty big, and also raises a good question we where wondering about earlier. Why should history matter to us? Why is it inportant that we should know our history.

Now personally, I feel history is important, and personally I find it interesting. But I am having some trouble in actually justifying why the common man should actually care, even though I feel that he should.

Lets have a google and some copy-pasting:

Why Study History? – HistoryGuide.org
Let’s face it, our first experience with History is that it is a course that we have to take in order to graduate. As a junior and senior high school student we are confronted with American history, state history and perhaps even a general course in western civilization or world history. We didn’t have a choice. And the fact that we are forced to take history puts us on the offensive. We begin to build that grandiose brick wall that will prevent us from getting anything important out of history.

Why Study History? – The American Historical Association
People live in the present. They plan for and worry about the future. History, however, is the study of the past. Given all the demands that press in from living in the present and anticipating what is yet to come, why bother with what has been? Given all the desirable and available branches of knowledge, why insist—as most American educational programs do—on a good bit of history? And why urge many students to study even more history than they are required to?

Why Study History? – history.hanover.edu
It is commonly acknowledged that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present. The analysis and interpretation of history provide an essential context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics, and cultures. Understanding the present configuration of society is not the only reason to study the past; history also provides unique insight into human nature and human civilization. By demanding that we see the world through the eyes of others, that we develop a sense of context and coherence while recognizing complexity and ambiguity, and that we confront the record not only of human achievement but also of human failure, cruelty, and barbarity, the study of history provides us with a richly-textured, substantive framework for understanding the human condition and grappling with moral questions and problems. History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts, the quest for wisdom and virtue.

In the final analysis history solves and settles nothing. We cannot and must not hope for final solutions. History shows us something far more valuable for our living purposes. It is perhaps the best means to achieving full consciousness of both necessity and freedom, permanence and change – of the always difficult but honorable terms of mortality, on which human beings have repeatedly failed, and in failure have created deathless values. In this consciousness we may know more freedom amid our necessities, more rest amid change.

to me, history is a big long list of cultural, political, social and environmental fuck-ups that we should do our best to ensure do not happen again…. unfortunately modern people are as stupid as people have ever been, historically speaking, and so the world is still quite officially fucked.

Between a job and a DVD

Turns out I didn’t have to start at DSM this week after all, so after a cup of coffee and a chat, I stepped back on the tram from Delft back to the centre and went back to the office.

This means I have two weeks of nothingness, which I am devoting to study.. study..study.  In fact, I was quite proud of myself today; I actually studied for about 4 hours, and worked though one and a half chapters of (hold your breath):
MCSA/MCSE Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-291): Implementing, Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure

Left work early (4ish) and dropped by the DVD store and picked up,
Tron (1982), The Boondock Saints (1999), Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 6 (1998), and tot top it all off:

Underworld: Supremacy Edition (2003), which is a Dutch-market release of the Underground R1 DVD, but with the original included aswell (2 disks).

Scrathing together these links, I noticed that there is a second Boondock Saints film on the way! Woohoo!

Looks like the original cast returns, exept I dont see William Defoe’s name in the cast list yet… if he doesnt play in it, that would be a real tragety, as he was fucking unbelievable in the original!

And my blogging has convinced my neigbour and sister to start a blog.  Oke, so my sister isn’t exactly convinced yet… I blackmailed her into starting a blog if I payed for Lineage II with my creditcard
